PsA Returns Without Meds
People with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) shouldn’t be too quick to go off their medications after experiencing remission, according to a small study published recently in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
Researchers at the University of Erlangen Nüremberg in Germany looked at 26 people with long-term PsA who had been in remission for at least six months and who were being treated with either a conventional disease modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) or a type of biologic called a TNF inhibitor. The patients were taken off their medication, and 20 of the 26 developed doctor-confirmed symptoms again within six months.
The results mean that we rarely cure PsA with current treatment but rather effectively suppress inflammation, and hence signs and symptoms, says lead study author Georg Schett, MD, professor of medicine.
