Exercise Pays Off – Arthritis and Fibro Pain

Step up to Relieve Fibro Pain

lone_jogger (2)Taking more steps each day may help reduce symptoms of fibromyalgia and improve overall health, according to a 2014 study in Arthritis Care & Research. Investigators followed 199 adults with fibromyalgia wearing an accelerometer, which tracked their step count, for 12 weeks. Those who increased their steps the most over the three-month period also had the most significant reduction in fibromyalgia symptoms. Exercise like walking increases the release of endorphin like chemicals in the blood and activates brain regions that dampen pain while reducing depression, says study author Dennis C. Ang. a rheumatologist at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Using a pedometer or activity monitor to track your steps can help you slowly increase activity.

Be a Fit Role Model

Whether you have arthritis or your spouse does, being physically active can help you both. Research from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that if one spouse exercises regularly, the other is significantly more likely to do the same. The findings were presented at the American Heart Association’s EPI/Lifestyle 2015 Scientific Sessions. Researchers looked at the records of 15,792 middle-age adults and asked 3,261 couples about their physical activity levels.

4 Super-foods that KO Arthritis Pain in a Flash

It’s well understood that your diet plays a crucial role in your arthritis pain. While the same foods that give you a trim waist and clear arteries will likely relieve your pain, a few foods stand head and shoulders above the rest. Add these 4 pain-fighting super-foods to your diet and you’ll probably feel a difference a few minutes after your last bite.

– Blueberries

Blueberries are overflowing with nutrients that KO arthritis pain. Yummy blueberries are especially rich in crucial compounds called antioxidants. Antioxidants are your body’s bodyguards that protect your joints from damage. If you don’t get enough of them, expect epic arthritis flare-ups to take hold.

In fact, a USDA commissioned study found that wild blueberries have more antioxidants than any other food on planet Earth! Research at the University of Prince Edward Island recently found that eating blueberries significantly reduced arthritis pain.

– Green Tea

If you have arthritis, there’s an acronym that should be part of your vocabulary: EGCG. EGCG is the insanely beneficial compound found only in green tea that fights everything from cancer to cavities.

Used for centuries as a pain reliever in China, green tea is earning the notice of University researchers in the West. A study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science found that EGCG drops inflammation and relieves pain in people with severe arthritis.

– Broccoli

If you’re like most people, your mother made you down this bitter green cruciferous veggie as a kid. If you followed to her advice into adulthood, you may not have arthritis today. Scientists at the University of East Anglia recently figured out why broccoli helps people with osteoarthritis –by far, the most common arthritis type.

They found that broccoli (and only broccoli) contains a funny sounding nutrient called sulforaphane. Sulforaphane presses the “OFF” button on enzymes that destroy vulnerable joints and cartridge.

– Kidney Beans

In terms of arthritis pain, kidney beans have a lot going for them. First, it’s got almost as much antioxidants per ounce as blueberries. Also, they’re one of the few carbohydrate sources known as “slow carbs.” Slow carbs are digested and absorbed slowly –unlike white bread, potatoes, and soda. Studies show that replacing rapidly digesting carbs with slow carbs relieves arthritis pain. Last (but not least), kidney beans are bursting with soluble fiber. Soluble fiber fights appetite and accelerates the weight loss results you get from dieting.

Eating these 4 foods may help you feel a bit better –but they’re not nearly enough to completely reverse arthritis. Click Here to Learn More

Arthritis – Joints and Muscles Pain

Which Would Be Nice Heat or Ice?

imagesJM9840CYIt’s no secret that heat and ice relieve aching joints and muscles, but many people don’t know when to use which one. Heat and cold affect blood flow in opposite ways, so they have different applications, says Scott Lynch, MD, director of sports medicine at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in State College.

COLD THERAPY: Cold causes blood vessels to constrict, which slows circulation and reduces swelling. It also makes nerve endings less sensitive, dulling the pain.

  • Best for: Inflamed or swollen joints; acute pain and swelling from injury; bruises; sprains. Those with a condition that affects circulation shouldn’t ice injuries.
  • How to apply: To prevent frostbite, use ice for no more than 20 minutes at a time. Use a towel or other buffer between a cold pack and your skin.

728x90-bad2d2f1-f770-435c-af1f-fa227fc1beed

HEAT THERAPY: Heat widens blood vessels, delivering nutrients that heal joints and muscles, while relaxing tight muscles.

  • Best for: Chronic pain, sore muscles and spasms and morning stiffness.
  • How to apply: Moist heat from a shower or bath penetrates muscle better than dry heat. Use heat 20 minutes before working out. Apply a heating pad no more than 20 minutes at a time, and buffer the skin to avoid burns.

PSORIATRIC ARTHRITIS – Studies Show – Stops Psoriasis Directly at the Source

PsA Returns Without Meds

psoriasis-typesPeople with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) shouldn’t be too quick to go off their medications after experiencing remission, according to a small study published recently in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.

Researchers at the University of Erlangen Nüremberg in Germany looked at 26 people with long-term PsA who had been in remission for at least six months and who were being treated with either a conventional disease modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) or a type of biologic called a TNF inhibitor. The patients were taken off their medication, and 20 of the 26 developed doctor-confirmed symptoms again within six months.

The results mean that we rarely cure PsA with current treatment but rather effectively suppress inflammation, and hence signs and symptoms, says lead study author Georg Schett, MD, professor of medicine.

Stress Is One Of The Primary Psoriasis Triggers, Learning HOW To Manage Stress On A Day To Day Basis Is A Critical Factor In Your Recovery From Psoriasis.

Stress causes your body to naturally secrete high levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and this works against you by:

  • Suppressing Your Immune System, Making You Even More Likely To Experience Recurring Psoriatic Plaques or Psoriatic Arthritis…
  • Increasing The Inflammatory Response, Causing More Pain, Redness, Swelling, Itching And Discomfort…
  • Reducing Your Energy Levels By Affecting Your Blood Sugar Levels, Making You Tired And Hungry For The Wrong Foods. Many Psoriasis Patients Are Overweight And Under Too Much Stress…
  • Causing Sleeping Disturbances Making You More Tired And Irritable, Preventing Quick Recovery From Lesions Or Pain…

The stress of recurring psoriasis alone causes your body to secrete stress Screen-Shot-2015-03-30-at-5_38_20-pm-300x206hormones continually Low-Grade, and so the chronic stress cycle continues on, making it literally impossible to correct psoriasis outbreaks. 75 Percent Of Psoriasis Patients Have Candida

Did you know that over three-quarters of ALL psoriasis patients in fact have a big problem with candida yeast infections? Numerous studies now validate 2014-11-26_1538this, but your doctor most probably will be ignoring this and just treating your skin instead. If you ignore the fact that there is a high probability that you may have a yeast overgrowth in your digestive system, you are missing the boat. This information is one of the missing links when it comes to getting rid of those continual psoriasis flare-ups. Once you finally correct the yeast overgrowth and restore balance and harmony to your digestive system amazing things will happen, like:

-No more sweet or sugar cravings

-Permanent weight loss

-Loads more energy and vitality

-No more bloating, gas or burping

-No more heartburn

-No more vaginal thrush

-No more jock itch

-No more toe nail fungus

Ignoring psoriasis or just ‘treating symptoms’ is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. The longer you continue to just “deal” with the symptoms, they worse they become and the longer it takes you condition to heal. If you have moderate to severe psoriasis, you’re at a much greater risk of developing certain diseases. Individuals with psoriasis are at an elevated risk to develop other chronic and serious health conditions such as heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, many other auto-immune diseases and even diabetes. People with severe psoriasis can even have a significantly elevated risk of heart attack.

Great Grains for Better Health, and the Fastest Way to Lose Weight

For Better Health, Go with Unrefined Options

creative_heartshaped_05_hd_picture_165828Food made with refined white flour often contain ingredients, like sugar and fats, that can lead to inflammation. But that’s not the only reason you should be eating fewer processed grains and more whole grains.

Whole grains cause a slower rise in blood glucose than refined grains. Eating more whole grains may make you eat less because you feel more full, and that may lead to less obesity, which is linked to inflammation.

In fact, research has linked eating whole grains to a host of health improvements, including reduced levels of C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation), lower cholesterol levels, a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and a longer life expectancy.

The Fastest Way To Lose Weight In 3 Weeks

The 3 Week Diet

Alicia Romano, a registered dietitian at Tufts Medical Center, believes the collective effect of  nutrients, like fiber and B vitamins, found in whole grains, and missing from refined grains, makes the difference.

You lose a lot of nutrients during the refining process. Whole grains consist of the bran, germ and endosperm, containing B vitamins (like thiamin, riboflavin and folate), iron, potassium, magnesium and other nutrients.

Refined grains are milled to achieve a finer texture, but milling strips out the fiber-rich bran and the germ, where nutrients are concentrated. They may be enriched (with stripped nutrients that are added back) and/or fortified with other nutrients.

Look for 100 percent whole grain (“pearled” grains are refined) and read ingredient lists. “The first ingredient should be 100 percent whole grains” Dietitian Romano says.

Simple Serving

Don’t be afraid to try different grains. Each grain has its own unique texture and flavor profile. Most are prepared like rice, simmer with water until it’s absorbed, although some need more water and time to cook. Make enough for several meals and refrigerate, then serve it reheated or cold with any meal.

For breakfast: Soak oats overnight in soy milk, microwave them in the morning and top with fresh fruit. Or heat a bowl of cooked amaranth and drizzle with honey, milk and walnuts.

For lunch: Cook and chill quinoa, then add black beans, chopped tomatoes, onions and celery, and toss with vinaigrette.

For supper: For a pilaf with a twist, saute onion and mushroom with faro in oil, then add water or broth and simmer until the liquid is absorbed.

Great Grains to Try

  • Amaranth
  • Barley
  • Buckwheat
  • Bulgur
  • Farro
  • Freekeh
  • Millet
  • Quinoa
  • Rye
  • Sorghum
  • Spelt
  • Teff

Rheumatoid Arthritis – a Life without Limits, even with RA

imag2If you are feeling stressed, depressed, angry or anxious, tell to your Rheumatologist. A new study in Arthritis Care & Research shows a link between atherosclerosis – fatty buildup in arteries that can lead to heart attack and stroke – and negative moods in people with RA. Your doctor can help you find ways to manage your emotions and help improve your heart health in the process. And don’t overlook the importance of a strong support network: Share feelings with friends and loved ones, and consider joining an RA support group.

Ask the doctor what can hinder the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and you may hear “a patient who downplays her pain.” But with today’s options, there is no need to accept limitations. Here’s how to feel your best!

Regardless of how you feel today, your rheumatologist should know about the pain and stiffness you’ve been feeling at any time since your last appointment. “Mainly, your rheumatologist wants to know if you are doing better or worse than the last time he saw you.” It’s very important for a physician to know about his patients day-to-day functioning. Some RA patients just accept limitations or hide from their physician the kinds of things they are not doing.”

Why it’s important to hit RA hard

“Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that causes inflammation throughout the body. It can affect all your organs, not only the joints,” notes rheumatologist Madelaine Feldman, MD, an associate clinical professor of medicine at Tulane University in New Orleans. “Our goal is to find a treatment that can put the disease into remission. or as close to it as possible, in order to prevent pain, inflammation and joint damage. RA can also take its toll mentally, so we want to address issues like depression and anxiety, too.

Nasal Polyps – The Natural Cure

Do I Have Nasal Polyps?

Do you suffer from recurrent colds and flu? If yes, you may have nasal polyps.

banner_180x150Nasal Polyps, also known as Sinus Polyps, are non-cancerous growths in the nose or in the sinuses (the canal behiand your cheekbone). The cause symptoms similar to those of cold and flu; however, the symptoms caused by nasal polyps will never get better. You may therefore have a persistently blocked or stuffy nose, and you may experience mucus running down the back of your throat. In addition, large polyps interfere with breathing and this can cause chronic headaches due to lack of oxygen. You may also find yourself yawning a lot, and experience daytime fatigue, even after a proper night’s sleep. You will notice that you don’t smell or taste as good as you used to.

Nasal polyps in the nasal passage can be visible to others and be very embarrassing, especially if you get asked what’s wrong in your nose! They have a teardrop shape, and may be pink, yellowish or grey in colour. They are soft to touch and have a jelly-like texture. Polyps can occur singly, or more often in clusters, a condition called polyposis. Often if you have polyps on one side, you will most likely also get them on the other side. Nasal polyps should not be left untreated. They increase your risk of nasal infections, which can be fairly serious. In addition, they tend to grow in size, and can cause pain, discomfort and swelling. Very large polyps can alter the shape of your face and be very embarrasing.

The exact cause of nasal polyps is not always known; however, what is known is that ultimately they occur as a result of an irritation and subsequent inflammation of nasal linings. This may be due to a chronic allergy, such asthma or hay fever. They may also be due to frequent nasal and sinus infections, an adverse reaction to aspirin, or living in heavily polluted areas. Injuries to the nose, mainly those which alter the shape of the nose, also increase the risk of getting nasal polyps. All these factors will cause the cells in the nasal linings to get inflamed, causing fluids to build up in them. Eventually, gravity pulls these fluid-laden cells down, resulting in the characteristic tear-drop growth of nasal polyps. If you suspect you have nasal polyps, you should get them checked by a doctor. A doctor will take a history and carry out a physical examination, sometimes with the use of a nasal speculum. In some cases, a CT scan or X-ray will be needed to confirm the diagnosis. You will then be adviced either to start steroid therapy or to undertake surgery. However, both of these approaches are only a short-term solution and are associated with a number of side effects and complications.

A permanent nasal polyps solution should be holistic and tackle the underlying cause of nasal polyps, and not only the symptoms. The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

180x150Chronic fatigue syndrome is a complex and debilitating disorder characterized by profound fatigue. The daily strain individuals suffer as a result of the condition is not mitigated with bed rest, and mental and physical activity can worsen its symptoms. Health can deteriorate to the point where the individual is bedridden. Chronic fatigue syndrome, or CFS, is partially attributed to “central sensitization”. Genetic, biological, psychological and infectious mechanisms have been proposed, but the etiology of chronic fatigue syndrome is not yet well understood and there may be several causes, including:

  • Immune system diseases
  • Interaction with toxins
  • Tense situations
  • Genetic disorders
  • A combination of factors

CFS affects several body systems, and symptoms may include:

  • Chronic debilitating exhaustion
  • Insomnia
  • Impaired memory and / or mental concentration
  • Muscle pain
  • Weakness
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Flu-like symptoms including muscle aches, headaches, chronic cough, and nausea
  • Poor quality of sleep
  • Joint pain without redness or swelling
  • Muscle pain
  • Tender lymph nodes in the neck or armpits
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Feeling unwell after physical activities or exercise

Because chronic fatigue syndrome is a debilitating disease, living with the disorder can be difficult. Daily lives are interrupted, and major lifestyle changes are necessary to adapt to limitations. Patients experience many difficulties, which include:

  • Worries about coping in day to day life
  • Alterations in relationships
  • Loss of livelihood, independence and financial security
  • Impaired memory
  • Unpredictable and changing symptoms
  • Due to the fact that chronic fatigue syndrome is not easy to diagnose, understanding CFS symptoms associated with CFS helps physicians to diagnose the condition correctly, to identify triggers, and helps the patient to comprehend the disease, making CFS easier to cope with.

For doctors, diagnosing chronic fatigue syndrome can be complicated by various factors, including:

  • Fatigue and other symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome overlap with other illnesses
  • There is no blood test, lab test or brain scan to diagnose CFS
  • Symptoms vary from case to case in type, severity and number

As there is no blood test, lab test or brain scan to diagnose CFS, doctors will first rule out other causes, before concluding that the individual is suffering from CFS.

CFS management can be as difficult as the illness itself. Often, a cocktail of medications is given, in what may a called a “shot-gun” approach – the hope is chronic%20fatigue%20syndrome%20solution%20350that one of the medications will provide some relief from the symptoms. However, there are much better ways to tackle CFS. These include dietary changes, nutritional supplements, lifestyle changes, and exercise therapy. These help the body to heal from within, and not just mask the symptoms. In addition, these approaches are natural and free of side effects.

With CFS, knowledge is power. Jennifer Nolan – a health consultant, nutritionist, and former CFS sufferer – has complied for the first time ever, a step-by-step guide to curing CFS by tackling imbalances within the body. Her guide “The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Solution™is backed by over 40 scientific and medical publications, and has already helped thousands of CFS sufferers worldwide. How To Cure Plantar Fasciitis – Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

300x250bPlantar Fasciitis is an injury sustained as the result of repetitive stress placed on the bottom of the foot. More specifically, its damage sustained on the fascia—a thin layer of fibrous tissue that protects other tissues within your feet. Many people develop Plantar Fasciitis from long periods of standing, running, or performing various load-bearing activities.

Plantar Fasciitis Symptoms
The most common symptom of Plantar Fasciitis is pain. This can be burning, stinging, stabbing or throbbing pain. Many people experience a dramatic amount of pain when they first get up in the morning, with the sensation lessening throughout the day. For others, the pain is consistent.

The pain can be isolated to an area in the middle of foot, or it can radiate outward towards the toes. The heel is another common area for Plantar Fasciitis pain to show up.

Plantar Fasciitis pain can be very stubborn and last for months or even years. Since walking and standing cannot be completely avoided in our lives, the injury can cause serious disturbances in professional and private life.

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis
Several different things can cause Plantar Fasciitis, which makes classifying the condition somewhat difficult. For example, bone spurs, flat feet, high-arched feet, and hard running surfaces are all very different—but each one can be a cause of the condition. Individuals in professions that require you to stand for long periods of time—nursing, for example—are at a higher risk for developing cause Plantar Fasciitis.

Another very common cause of Plantar Fasciitis is the type of shoe you choose to wear. Older or poorly constructed shoes can place your feet at a higher risk for stress. Shoes that don’t have adequate padding for the heel and arch can be a problem as well.

Finally, overweight individuals are at a higher risk for developing Plantar Fasciitis. As you gain weight, this naturally places more stress on the tissues of your feet, and the fascia tends to bear the brunt of this.

Treatments of Plantar Fasciitis
There are a number of treatment options for Plantar Fasciitis. From special orthotic devices and splints, to stretching and strengthening the fascia itself. R.I.C.E. is a common treatment regimen, which stands for Rest Icepack application Compression and Elevation. Research has shown that 25% of individuals with Plantar Fasciitis have found that rest is the best treatment.
Many people have success with dietary modifications as well. Zinc, for example, is an essential mineral that helps you repair and regenerate damaged tissue.

Plantar Fasciitis can be a very debilitating medical condition if it is left untreated. The good news, however, is that there are a number of solutions available to help you overcome it.
